Armoured Joint Systems for Industrial Concrete Floors

An armoured joint protects the concrete edge at a construction or functional joint, transfers load between the two slabs and lets the joint open as the slab shrinks. It is used only where an engineering analysis shows that a joint must remain.

Why floor joints fail

  • Unprotected concrete edges are broken down by hard-wheeled traffic once the joint opens
  • Joints without load transfer let the two slab edges deflect differently under a passing wheel
  • Sealants and fillers cannot carry wheel loads across a gap that keeps widening
  • Repairs to a failed joint are repeated because the cause, edge load and movement, has not changed

What an armoured joint does

Edge protection

Steel armouring takes the wheel impact that would otherwise break down the concrete arris, so the joint edge stays intact under forklift and AGV traffic.

Load transfer

Plate or bar load-transfer elements make the two slab edges deflect together under a wheel, which removes the step and the rocking that destroy joints and vehicles alike.

Slab movement and joint opening

The system is designed to open as the slab shrinks and, in cold stores, contracts with temperature, while still transferring load across the widened gap.
